Understanding how CPNS will operate
Council:
- Made up of 8 paramedics, EHS Provincial Medical Director, 1 nurse, 1 physician, and 4 members of the public
- The first CPNS Council will be appointed by the Minister of Health to establish the College
- Future paramedic positions on the Council will be elected by paramedics
CEO (Registrar):
- The Council will hire the CEO
- The CEO will be called the Registrar
- He/she will be a paramedic registered in Nova Scotia
- He/she will run the College as a business, according to the Paramedics Act
- This is a different role than the current EHS Registrar
- There will no longer be an EHS Registrar
Support Staff:
- The CPNS Registrar will hire the College's support staff
- The support staff will be located in their own office, separate from EHS and EMC. The location will be decided later.
Committees:
- Investigation:
- Investigates all complaints
- Tries to resolve the issues
- Issues that cannot be resolved are referred to the Hearing Committee
- Hearing:
- Deals with all unresolved disciplinary complaints
- Registration:
- Deals with registering and re-registering paramedics
- Others as needed:
- Examples might be: Communications, public relations, continuing education
