CPNS Current Events


Understanding how CPNS will operate

Council:

  • Made up of 8 paramedics, EHS Provincial Medical Director, 1 nurse, 1 physician, and 4 members of the public
  • The first CPNS Council will be appointed by the Minister of Health to establish the College
  • Future paramedic positions on the Council will be elected by paramedics

CEO (Registrar):

  • The Council will hire the CEO
  • The CEO will be called the Registrar
    • He/she will be a paramedic registered in Nova Scotia
    • He/she will run the College as a business, according to the Paramedics Act
  • This is a different role than the current EHS Registrar
  • There will no longer be an EHS Registrar

Support Staff:

  • The CPNS Registrar will hire the College's support staff
  • The support staff will be located in their own office, separate from EHS and EMC. The location will be decided later.

Committees:

  • Investigation:
    • Investigates all complaints
    • Tries to resolve the issues
    • Issues that cannot be resolved are referred to the Hearing Committee
  • Hearing:
    • Deals with all unresolved disciplinary complaints
  • Registration:
    • Deals with registering and re-registering paramedics
  • Others as needed:
    • Examples might be: Communications, public relations, continuing education
